What's the Cost of Getting it Wrong With AI?

Hi everyone,

Lately I've been writing a lot about "AI slop" and problems like hallucinations: all of which stem from the technical construction of language models.

These aren't problems we can prompt ourselves away from: they're fundamental to the ways we use AI. And we can decide if, how, and when we use AI in our communications.

In this week's article, I use two terms as a way to help make those decisions: cost and catchability. Cost is the risk of getting it wrong: reputational harms, maybe even a financial harm. Catchability is the difficulty of a human auditor spotting the problem.

Between cost and catchability, we can determine whether the risk of an AI hallucination, or a poorly designed AI image, or any other use of AI is really worth it.

Practical AI Strategies 2 is Available Now for Pre-Order!

Many of you on the mailing list are already supporting the upcoming release of Practical AI Strategies 2: the launch team has been sending me great feedback on draft chapters of the book.

Here are a couple of highlights:

I love your writing style. It's pitched at a conversational level but with enough professionalism, rigour and humour that as an educator I am interested in reading on. Danni Foster-Brown: Head of Virtual Learning Community and Future Learning
Love that the 2026 process starts with apply expertise. Humans must still be in the loop (say it louder for the people in the back). Victoria Spicer-Stuart: Head of Teaching and Learning - Digital Practice, Beaconhills College
