Practical AI Strategies 2 is off to the typesetters 🎉

Hi everyone,

The final of draft of Practical AI Strategies 2 is back from the editor and off to typesetting. That puts us on track for publication in September!

Building on the first book published in 2024, Practical AI Strategies 2 covers both the practical and the critical aspects of the technology in five parts: Using GenAI in Education; AI and Assessment; Critical AI Literacy; Beyond Chatbots; and The Near Future of GenAI.

Like last time, I'm putting together a launch team. I love to hear from readers before book releases, and I think it's especially important this time since so much has changed in GenAI in the past two years.

Launch team members get:

  • Access to chapter proofs before publication
  • A first look at the finished book
  • Bonus materials during the book launch

All I ask for in return is your genuine feedback along the way, and your thoughts on the book when it's released.

Rented Expertise: Access isn't the same as ownership

There's been a lot of talk over the past few years about GenAI "democratising" knowledge, education, and even creativity. The logic - usually from the companies selling AI - is that Large Language Models like GPT make it possible to use "intelligence on demand".

But access is not the same as ownership. A lot of the research on the impact of GenAI on learning is pointing in the same direction: if we rely on GenAI in the learning process, we get the illusion of competence, but without the deep connections to the material needed to develop lasting expertise.

In this week's article, I call this Rented Expertise: having access to the products and performance of expertise, but without the accumulation of underlying knowledge, judgement, or responsibility.

Cheers,

Leon
