Practical AI Strategies

Hi everyone,

This week I’ve been at schools in Melbourne and Regional Victoria talking about the near future of GenAI, and the ever present “AI assessment” conversation.

One thing was clear across all sessions. Whether teachers love AI, hate it, or are totally indifferent, everybody understands the importance of helping students negotiate this new online territory.

The Internet isn’t what it was when we were growing up! Many of us are old enough to remember having to unplug the phone to plug in a modem and “log on to the internet” (you just heard the noise in your mind). But today’s students will be surrounded by always-connected devices packed with ambient AI systems.

I don’t know what that looks like but it seems like we’re the generation responsible for bridging the gap.

PhD Retrospective Part 2: Finishing the Journey

This week on the blog I shared part two of the PhD journey. In this article I gallop and then limp and then stumble across the finish line and reflect on why my writing in 2024-2025 was so angry. It was also a good opportunity to look back over nearly 400 articles and wonder “why on earth did I write that?!”

Send your examples: How do you use GenAI

I’ve also posted a brief fifth post in the “If You Know You Know” series which has shared ideas about how to learn what GenAI can really do.

This article is a simple call to action: I want to hear from you about your unique and slightly unusual uses of GenAI. From those examples, I’ll be zooming out and identifying some patterns and processes we can all learn from.

Weekly Newsletter Practical AI Strategies AI and the Techlash Hi everyone, I'm sure you've noticed an uptick in articles recently which are not only anti-tech, but specifically anti-AI. For the past few years, I've been writing about the (many) ethical concerns of the AI industry: environmental concerns, bias, privacy, and more. But in recent months, there's been a new surge of mainstream media journalism about the technology. A lot of it has been positioned around the "cognitive offload"...

Weekly Newsletter Practical AI Strategies Beyond Scales: In theory and in practice Hi everyone, This week I’ve been reflecting on the journey of the AI Assessment Scale since its first version back in 2023 (or 650 years ago in AI years). Many readers of this email will be familiar with the scale (if you’re not, aiassessmentscale.com has all the papers), and I’ve had the pleasure of talking through the AIAS with hundreds of educators in the past few years. But we also know that scales and...

Weekly Newsletter Practical AI Strategies PhD Retrospective: Three Years of GenAI in Education Plus: The Term 3 Waitlist for Practical AI for Curriculum Leaders closes Sunday Hi everyone, I've been running a lot of online PD for the past few weeks, including some chunky three-hour workshops on topics like assessment and the use of AI for making teaching resources. In many of the sessions, we've reached the same conclusion: GenAI doesn't save you time. The technology can be used in ways which...
